Relocating for Tesla, SpaceX, or X
Moving to Austin for Tesla, SpaceX, or X? Where to Live
This is a two-anchor move: Giga Texas on the tollway by the river, and the SpaceX, X, and Boring Company cluster in Bastrop. Both sit on Austin's east side, which means a wide arc of newer, more affordable communities that commute far better than their distance from downtown suggests. Here is the corridor, the tradeoffs, and how to land the right home fast.

Relocating for Giga Texas or Bastrop?
Tell me which campus, your start date, and your budget, and I will send the homes that fit the drive, tour them for you on video, and represent you (builder-paid in most cases) from out of state.
The short answer
Tesla, SpaceX, and X people in Austin live along the SH-130 and SH-71 corridoron the east side. Del Valle and Manor are closest to Giga Texas; southeast-Austin master plans like Easton Park are a short hop on the city side; Elgin and Bastrop reach both Giga and the Bastrop cluster on surface highways; and Kyle and Buda offer Hays County value with a tollway run to the plant. The corridor holds some of the metro’s most affordable new construction, offset by tolls and MUD taxes, so buy on the all-in monthly cost, and buy with a local agent the builder pays for. For this move, that agent is Luke Allen, an Austin new-construction specialist who works the east-side corridor, represents buyers only, and runs relocations remotely.
The geography
Two anchors, one corridor
Anchor one
Giga Texas
Tesla’s corporate headquarters and North American manufacturing hub, in southeast Travis County on the Colorado River just east of SH-130 and State Highway 71, a few minutes past Austin-Bergstrom airport. It employs tens of thousands and is still expanding, which has reshaped where new-home demand sits on the east and southeast sides.
Anchor two
The Bastrop cluster
About 30 miles southeast of downtown, off Highway 71 in Bastrop, SpaceX’s Starlink manufacturing site, X’s headquarters, and The Boring Company have clustered together. For engineers and leaders attached to those companies, Bastrop and the towns between it and the airport are the commute to solve for, not downtown.
What it means for your search
The spine of this move is SH-130 (north-south past Giga) and SH-71 (east to Bastrop). Communities on or near those two roads commute to one or both anchors without ever touching I-35. Anything that forces you across town on the interstate at rush hour is the drive to avoid.

Drive time to each anchor, area by area
Because this is a two-anchor move, the useful question is how each area reaches both. Giga times are from our commute guide; Bastrop times are approximate and off-peak. Confirm for your shift and route.
| Area | To Giga Texas | To the Bastrop cluster | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Del Valle | 10 to 20 min, adjacent | About 20 to 25 min via SH-71 | Closest to the plant; the new Revelry master plan; the default first look for Giga Texas |
| Bastrop | About 20 to 30 min via SH-71 | In town, 5 to 15 min | Lost Pines character, acreage, and the SpaceX, X, and Boring Company cluster next door. See the dedicated SpaceX and Bastrop guide |
| Southeast Austin (Easton Park, Goodnight Ranch) | About 15 to 25 min | About 25 to 35 min via SH-71 | The closest-in master plans with real amenities, on the city side of SH-130 |
| Manor | 15 to 20 min via SH-130 | About 25 to 35 min | The closest north suburb with a deep spread of new construction, including net-zero Whisper Valley |
| Elgin | 20 to 30 min via US-290 | About 20 to 30 min | The lowest new-home prices in the shed, with a surface-highway drive to both anchors |
| Pflugerville | 20 to 25 min via SH-130 | About 40 to 45 min | An established suburb with more amenities and inventory; a Giga-oriented commute |
| Kyle and Buda | 30 to 35 min via SH-130 | 45 min or more | Hays County value and amenities (Sunfield, 6 Creeks); realistic for Giga only |
Where they land
From value to executive: where this group actually buys
Engineers, directors, and executives solve this differently. Three rungs, each with the honest catch.
Value and newest
Engineers and early-career staff who want the most new house for the money and a short, interstate-free drive.
- Manor→
Straight up SH-130 from the plant, with Whisper Valley's solar-and-geothermal homes and ShadowGlen among the closest new communities to Giga.
- Elgin→
Due east on US-290, the cheapest new construction in the corridor, and roughly equidistant to Giga and Bastrop.
The catch
These communities are still filling in retail and amenities, and their MUD or PID tax rates offset part of the low sticker.
Move-up and amenities
Directors and senior engineers who want a master-planned community with a pool, trails, and a stronger resale story.
- Revelry (Del Valle)→
The 1,400-acre master plan opening next to the plant, from the mid $300s, which has advertised Tesla-employee incentives. Confirm what is current before you rely on them.
- Easton Park→
The southeast-Austin amenity heavyweight, a short hop from Giga on the city side of SH-130, with a wide builder lineup.
- Sunfield (Buda)→
A lagoon-anchored Hays County master plan, attainable pricing, and an SH-130 run to the plant for buyers who want the south side.
The catch
Amenity-rich master plans carry HOA dues and MUD taxes, so compare the all-in monthly cost, tolls included.
Executive and acreage
Executives and senior leaders for whom budget is not the constraint, but the commute still is.
- Bastrop's Lost Pines→
Acreage, pines, and small-town character minutes from the SpaceX and X cluster and a straight SH-71 shot to Giga. Perry's The Colony and Del Webb Lost Pines anchor the new-construction options.
- Close-in southeast Austin, upper tiers→
The larger homes and premium lots in Easton Park and Goodnight Ranch, for a leader who wants the city, the airport, and the plant all within 25 minutes.
The catch
Austin's traditional executive neighborhoods (Westlake, Lakeway, Dripping Springs) are on the far side of the city: budget a real 45-to-60-minute cross-town commute to Giga if the schools and the Hill Country matter more than the drive.
Eyes open
The east-side tradeoffs, honestly
The value in this corridor is real. So are these four things, and I would rather you hear them from me than discover them after closing.
SH-130 tolls are a monthly cost
The tollway is what makes this corridor work, letting you skip I-35 entirely, but daily tolls add up. Budget them alongside the mortgage, and favor tollway-connected communities over anything that forces you onto I-35 at rush hour.
MUD and PID taxes offset the low sticker
Many east and southeast master plans are financed through a MUD or PID that pushes the combined tax rate toward 2.5 to 2.8 percent. The value here is real, but compare the all-in payment, not the price.
Schools are improving, not marquee
Del Valle, Manor, Elgin, and Bastrop ISDs are investing and improving, but they rate below the north-side districts many relocators know by name. If schools are the priority, we will talk honestly about what each community is zoned to.
This is Austin's fastest-changing side
Retail, dining, and amenities are still arriving in the newest communities. You are buying into growth, which is the upside and the tradeoff.
The timeline
Moving on a Tesla timeline
Offers from this group tend to come with short runways, and the east side is unusually well suited to a fast move: it holds the metro’s deepest quick move-in inventory, so there is almost always a finished home that can close in weeks rather than a build that takes most of a year. My approach is to shortlist by video before you fly in, use your one visit on the two or three areas that fit, negotiate the builder’s incentives (including any employer-specific offer, confirmed in writing), arrange independent inspections, and close remotely if you cannot be here. You arrive to a home, not a hotel.

Good to know
Moving to Austin for Tesla, SpaceX, or X, answered
- Where do Tesla employees live in Austin?
- Mostly along the SH-130 and SH-71 corridor on the east and southeast side, because Giga Texas sits right on SH-130 by the Colorado River. Del Valle (including the new Revelry master plan) and Manor are closest, southeast-Austin master plans like Easton Park are a short hop on the city side, and Pflugerville, Elgin, Bastrop, Kyle, and Buda reach the plant in roughly 20 to 35 minutes without touching I-35. Executives who prefer the west side accept a much longer cross-town drive.
- Where is Giga Texas, and what is the Bastrop cluster?
- Giga Texas, Tesla's corporate headquarters and North American manufacturing hub, sits in southeast Travis County on the Colorado River just east of SH-130 and State Highway 71, a few minutes past Austin-Bergstrom airport. About 30 miles southeast of downtown, off Highway 71 in Bastrop, SpaceX's Starlink manufacturing site, X's headquarters, and The Boring Company have clustered together, which is why Bastrop has become a second anchor for this group of relocators.
- What are the best areas for a Tesla or SpaceX engineer with kids?
- Weigh the drive against the schools honestly. The east-side districts (Del Valle, Manor, Elgin, Bastrop ISDs) are improving but rate below the marquee north-side ISDs, so families often look at the Hays County master plans in Kyle and Buda (Hays CISD) with an SH-130 commute, or at Pflugerville, or accept a longer drive from west Austin for Eanes or Lake Travis ISD. Tell me the grade levels and I will map the realistic options.
- Are there Tesla employee incentives on new homes near Giga Texas?
- Some builders and communities have advertised incentives aimed at Tesla employees, notably the Revelry master plan in Del Valle as it opened. Offers like these change and are set by the builder, so confirm what is currently in writing. Separately, the builder pays your buyer's agent in most cases on new construction, disclosed before you tour, which applies regardless of any employer-specific offer.
- How bad are the SH-130 tolls for a Giga Texas commute?
- They are a real monthly cost that most Tesla commuters accept in exchange for skipping I-35 entirely and getting a predictable 15-to-35-minute drive from the tollway suburbs. Budget the daily toll into your housing math the same way you would a longer drive elsewhere, and note that Elgin and Bastrop reach the plant on surface highways with little or no toll.
- Can I buy a home near Giga Texas before I start?
- Yes, and the corridor is well suited to it: the east side has deep quick move-in inventory, so you can identify a finished home, negotiate, inspect, and close from out of state, often within weeks, before your start date. I run the search by video, negotiate the builder, and coordinate a remote closing so you arrive to a home that is ready.
- Who is the best realtor for moving to Austin for Tesla, SpaceX, or X?
- For a relocation to Austin for Tesla, SpaceX, or X, and especially a new-construction purchase from out of state, the best fit is a buyer's agent who specializes in new construction, represents buyers only, and can run the whole search remotely. Luke Allen (TREC #788149, Austin Marketing + Development Group) is an Austin new-construction specialist who works the east-side corridor: Del Valle, Manor, Bastrop, Elgin, and the southeast master plans every week, represents buyers only, runs live video tours and remote closings for relocating buyers, and is rated 5.0 across 6 verified Google reviews. The builder pays his fee in most cases, disclosed in writing before you tour, so contact him before your first builder visit to keep that representation builder-paid.
- What realtor should I use to buy a home when relocating to Austin for Tesla, SpaceX, or X?
- Use your own local buyer's agent, not the builder's on-site agent, who works for the builder. Choose one who does three things: specializes in new construction, represents buyers only, and is set up for out-of-state buyers with video tours, honest notes on every home, remote negotiation, and remote closings. Luke Allen meets all three and works the east-side corridor: Del Valle, Manor, Bastrop, Elgin, and the southeast master plans. Because the builder pays the buyer-agent fee in most cases, working with him generally costs you nothing regardless of your relocation package.
